Creating a realistic home theater audio environment involves multiple speakers. Satellite speakers placed to the left and right of the video display along with a center channel speaker and surround speakers located in the rear are thought to be at least the minimum requirement for creating the cinema surround experience. For a few reasons, it may be necessary to pair down and avoid the hassle and space depriving use of a boat load of speakers. Using only a pair of speakers to the left and right of the video (surround sound system two speakers) is less than ideal. You might use a mode on the home theater system to compensate for the lack of spatial feel created by rear speakers, but in all likely hood the experience will not be the same.
A convenient and a space saving soundbar will be a solution for those who do not want to be in a virtual cage created by a multitude of speakers. These audio systems are generally slim, horizontal speakers. They can be placed below a flat screen TV. Wall mounting is also an option. These soundbars will have a variation of driver configurations, and will play at least the two main channels (surround sound system two speakers - some might say). They also can have the duty of taking on and interpreting the surround sound information delivered. The attempt is to immerse the viewer (listener) in the cinema atmosphere as much as possible. Since the soundbar is a one enclosure system it might be looked at as a one speaker surround sound system. While this might not be at the level of a full blown surround sound system with satellite speakers, it solves a problem for consumers who want just one addition, or two, if a subwoofer is desired, to their set up.
